What is a home measurement or floorplan service?

Home measurement services are just what they sound like: Based on your needs, an appraiser will measure your property's dimensions and square footage, then draw a basic or highly detailed floorplan. The appraiser's report and floorplan is a form that can be used to prove an accurate Gross Living Area (GLA), the sum of all livable area, of your home. How do floorplan services work?

During a floorplan service, an appraiser measures your property with a measuring tool — either a tape or laser measuring device. As they walk the home, they observe the layout of the rooms and other features, like stairs, hallways, and fireplaces. They may sketch out the property. Then, the appraiser writes up a report and a more detailed floorplan showing the total living area of the home and the overall layout.
